Kent Kiwanis Essay
Dear Meridian Families,
We are more than halfway through the school year! Winter is still here, but Spring is around the corner. We are hoping
we get there with no more snow!
It is always wonderful when community organizations recognize students and staff. Every year Rotary and Kiwanis
show their support by honoring students and/or staff from all schools in the Kent School District. I am proud to say
congratulations are in order for Meridian.
Congratulations to three Meridian students for their participation and winning of the 46th annual Kiwanis Essay Contest.
The winning students all came from Mrs. Regnart’s class. The winners are: 1st place- Lauren M., 2nd place—
Adrian M., 3rd place— Jane A.
Additionally, Rotary recognized four 8th grade Meridian students and two staff members at a breakfast in January.
Congratulations to staff members Idrissa Binta and Susan Gillespie for their service to Meridian students and families.
The students were recognized for either service/citizenship or academic achievement. The students for service/
citizenship are Itzel B. and Chase C. The students for academic achievement are Yael A., and Nishchal S.
Eighth graders have completed their high school registration for their electives and core classes. Counselors from all
the high schools came to Meridian to meet with the students who are attending their specific school and guide them
through the registration process. If you have any questions about high school choices, please contact your student’s
high school counseling office. We do not have access to or control over high school scheduling. Seventh graders also
completed their selection of elective classes for next year. Students were asked to rank their choices. We try to give
students their first or second choice, but that is not always possible. If you have any questions, please contact Meridian
counselors based on their grade level:
8th grade: Brian Upchurch (email@example.com)
7th Grade: Idrissa Binta (Idrissa.firstname.lastname@example.org)
We have 2 more schoolwide assessments coming up in April and May. In April, students will take the 3rd iReady test.
This assessment shows us students’ academic progress 3 times per year in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. The
Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) is taken once per year and is test that measures what students learn for the
standards at their grade level. Each of these assessments are used by staff to make class placements and instructional
adjustments based on the needs of students.
We are making great progress. We have great students and staff at Meridian who are working hard to achieve their
Looking forward to Spring!
